Debember 28, 1998

DATELINE: BALTIMORE, MD - DECEMBER 28, 1998

Today is my last day of employment at The Engineers Club, following my resignation last month (More about my own plans will come in future news.. Stay Tuned!!!). I never knew that answering a small ad in the newspaper in 1992 would have led me to so many opportunites - as an editor of the club's publication, head of communications and public relations efforts, and as a colleague to many of the club's committees and members... I also never imagined that the activities of restaurant management and event planning would become a part of my day-to-day routine, but thanks to the club's in-house food and beverage staff, I have now added their knowledge to mine... However, the one aspect of the club that I will miss the most is the club itslef - not just a building and catering facility, and not just an association of people and volunteers, but the unqiue combination of the two. The Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, home to the organization for over 36 years, is a wonderful architectural treasure, but it should not be considered the focus of the organization. Nor should any one member or group of members seek to use the club for their own purposes... The focus of any organization should be all of its members and the community that it serves. Without a concientious membership and staff, The Engineers Club would no longer be one of Baltimore's most time-honored and respected institutions. Best of luck to the club, its members, its staff, and its heritage. May they all continue to work together for an improved future.

August 2, 1998

DATELINE: BALTIMORE, MD - AUGUST 2, 1998

Just got back from Paramount's Kings Dominion, where the big news is... the Volcano! This new ride really separates the roller coaster enthusiasts from the bumper car people.... Nine people are strapped into seats, suspended from a rail, and are quickly whisked into the structure, where they are twirled and whirled around and then straight up, until the mountain rumbles and the people are shot up through steam, and flung out the top of the simulated volcano, feet-first, at 70-80 miles per hour!

The ride lasts 1 minute and 28 seconds, but everyone said it was worth the 3-hour wait.... For me, I'll just stick to the bumper cars. The Volcano also separates families, friends, couples, etc... between those that are daredevils and those that still have their brains and prefer not to have them flung around precariously.

The other new "exciting" ride is the Xtreme Sky Flyer, where people are strapped together in a harness (as many as three at a time) and hoisted 150 feet up into the air, then dropped until they fall and swing across their worried relatives below!

Whatever happened to those teacup rides at the Enchanted Forest?

DATELINE: BALTIMORE, MD - NOVEMBER 24, 1998

Brian Davis Lyles announced today that he will be leaving the 94-year-old daytime soap opera "The Engineers Club" after a six-year stint as the show's handsome young executive and romantic heartthrob. His departure occurs as his character was being abruptly written out of the storyline and is the latest in an upheaval by show producers that saw several long-time cast members leave at the end of summer. Critics had panned the show in recent weeks, although the humor, pathos and particularly the hilarious antics of the show's new diva Dandi Rutch have garnered high ratings... However, the new star's popularity may be overrated. When polled, most viewers could not distinguish Ms. Rutch from Quark, the Ferengi on Star Trek's "Deep Space Nine", or Francis, the talking mule... Only time will tell if the series will be renewed next season.

DATELINE: BALTIMORE, MD - NOVEMBER 20, 1998

As Turkey Day approaches, I am preparing for a trek down Pratt Street during Baltimore's annual Thanksgiving Parade... Alongside an antique fire engine, Engineers Club members and one weary PR person will begin promoting the annual Fire Ball (a benefit for its historic Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, scheduled for Saturday, March 13, 1999.) If you don't know the connection between the Baltimore Fire, the Club and me... give me a call (410-539-6914).

DATELINE: BALTIMORE, MD - JULY 1, 1998

So, I know I haven't updated this page in a while. But now that summer is officially here, I thought I would... What's NEW... Well, this month marks the completion of 6 years at The Engineers Club. And, since no one else has noticed, I thought I'd pat myself on the back.

DATELINE: WASHINGTON, D.C. - JANUARY 1, 1998

Brian Lyles is reportedly recovering from a wonderful New Year's Eve celebration in Washington, D.C.... And so is the cab, the cab driver, and several innocent bystanders who witnessed the events which ensued from several shots of something called "cactus juice".

DATELINE: HOLLYWOOD, CA. - JUNE 23, 1997
MGM/UA spokespeople have confirmed that Brian Davis Lyles has been cast in SPECIES II, currently filming in the Baltimore area, quickly becoming known as Hollywood East.

Although he is only an extra, if the scene does not end up on the cutting room floor, this will be Lyles' major motion picture debut, and his first acting job since his stint as stage manager and Action Comedy News anchorman in the Baltimore comedy troupe Contents Under Pressure in 1990. (Coincidentally, there he performed with actors that appeared in the such films as Avalon and Hairspray , also filmed in Baltimore.) Lyles began his stage career by performing in talent shows at his alma maters Gilman School and Loyola College.

Brian Lyles is one of the department managers at The Engineering Society of Baltimore, Inc. Located in Baltimore's historic Garrett-Jacobs Mansion in Mount Vernon Place, The Engineering Society has been the locations of several motion pictures and television productions itself, and Lyles has assisted in coordinating activities during the filmings of the movies Twelve Monkeys and Major League II , as well as NBC's Homicide: Life on the Streets.

Originally chosen to be one of the biologists in a lab scene, MGM says that Lyles is now to be one of several Air Force MPs. Further details are under wraps; however it has been learned that filming for the scene will take place on Monday, June 23rd at an Hitachi facility in Burtonsville, Maryland.
